Wowzers

Well I will try and keep this quick and short, and try to update more often that this big gap!
-Seagulls and Dump are off to rocky starts! The Sexy Seagulls have a 1-3 start while the Dump have a un-respectable 0-2 start. We will get going and win us some championships soon.
-Reffing high school hockey is going nice. All the girls are improving before my eyes and its nice to see, the best thing is they are always laughing and having fun! Nice to see Immaculata with a good girls team finally! They have some solid players and a goalie!
-Reffing Boys HS Hockey on the other hand is same old goon garbage.
-Reffed a midget AA game last night, reffed, not lined, thats a lot of skating for my slim self... still feeling it this morning, and tonight... Reffing is going ok, enjoy the cash thats for sure.
-School is going good, finished a sport finance midterm yesterday and a project management midterm today.
-Metcalfe Jr B Internship is good. We are going around to everyone looking for sponsors (anyone want to sponsor us?)
-And finally coaching is great as always. 2-0 to start the season, game tomorrow night. Entered out minor peewee team into a major peewee tournament last weekend, was good fun, saw some of our kids just get destroyed, but we ended up beating on of the major teams so it was more than a successful weekend!
Will post some more soon!

Catch up...

Well I guess last we left I was heading to bed getting ready to wake up for practice at 6:00 am. It was an early morning that is for sure. The two hour practice was good, kids skated hard, had some fun, learned some things... I got home around 10, napped for a long time. Then had to go to the team meeting with parents and kids. It was fun. Got to meet some parents, drink some brew, eat some great food and have some great conversations. That lasted until 6 where I then had to head to the Sensplex for my first Div 1 game as a player.
Oh man, we got romped. Turns out my Competitive B goalie skills do not transfer over as player, and does not compare to anyone on the ice, especially the other team. The team I joined is a great team, super strong, sick players, lot of old Jr Players, NHL draft pick, U of O player etc... But this other team was nuts. NCAA players, AHL players, OHL players, it was nuts! I never skated so hard in my life to get nothing out of it. My ass busting strides kept up with their goalie skating backwards to get to his net. Now, on a side note, thanks to Cody, I was very aerodynamic. The gigantic large jersey (sarcasm) he handed me fit so snug I could not wear shoulder pads. It was as TIGHT as (insert inappropriate joke here). Either way, the game was nuts. We were down 7-1 after the first. Thanks to their act of kindness, they started cycling to keep the score low, which meant since I was winger, I just had to stand beside their D and catch my breath, thank God! Game ended 8-3.
Monday saw me finally sleeping in until noon, which was well needed. I then proceeded to the basement to lounge until 3. At 3:30, I was on the ice at Earl Armstrong watching snails race. By that I mean I was reffing Tier 2 Girls Highschool Hockey. There are no words that can precisely describe how bored we were on the ice. I will leave it at that.
Tuesday saw me hitting up class. Morning class was ok, started a group project on the Hamilton Ti-Cats game day entertainment. Will be a fun project. Then we had a field trip. Class 2 of the day took place at Sir John A pub over some brews and lunch, was good. We then went to SIRC for the rest of the afternoon. This is a sport related library in Ottawa which is amazing. Great place, will be spending time there for sure. We got a free membership ($250.00 value) for their serivces for 15 months. I helped a lot to (forced) and won a bottle because of it, which I accidentally broke while walking to the car.
I then had to ref an exciting minor atom b game. It was not exciting as mentioned. It was brutal. Why this non contact atom hockey is 3 man I will never know.
We then had our 3rd Seagulls game last night. We finally put up a win bringing us to 1-2 on the year. I have played two games in net, have been ran 7 times. What the hell? My back is killing me today.
Either way thats where were at! Get to coach at 6:00 tonight, big exhibition game!

What a day!

Well hope you are ready to read, this will be a long one!
This morning at 8:15am our Minor Peewee B's beat West Carleton 1-0 in a great game. Our defense was solid as usual, and our forwards were gunning it the whole game. It is so fun to teach these kids how to hit, and position themselves to make smart plays rather than smoking a kid. They are smart kids and this will be a fun season! For those of you who don't know, I am an assistant coach on this team. The other assistant is John, and hes a great guy who knows a bunch about hockey, and then there is the head coach, the great Marc Power. I have already learned so much from this man. For those of you who haven't googled his name yet, he is the skating coach of numerous teams, including the Senators, and the Olympic Hockey Teams. He has some how already made me skate better! Either way he lost it this game as there was a hit from behind uncalled. Good on Marc for sticking up for our kids safety, but even bigger props to the ref. Its nice to see young officials handle themselves as this one did. He did ding us for a bench minor for the chirps, but he came over, talked to us, didnt toss Marc, and after the game explained exactly what he saw. It was nice to see young ref's doing a good job like this man did. Good morning none the less!
After the morning and some delicious breakfast, I came home and tried to sneak some z's in. Didnt work so well. Of the planned 4 hour nap, I snuck 1.5... What can you do. Ref boss called, gave me a bunch of High School games ($$$$$$$$!!!!!!!) which is great. Unfortunately the start of the year is always Tier 2 Gals and Non Contact Lads. Not to be harsh, but I would much rather hand my dad the remote control so he can watch his weather network for 3 hours than stand at one of these games. I mean its great to see them having fun and playing hockey as it should be, but wow, sometimes its just not fun to ref! Especially when you get a bad team facing a horendous team, and the score is 14 to the power 3 vs .25. But money is money, and hockey is hockey, do the time, get better games down the road! (OFSAA is back in O-Town this year!)
Also got to watch some puck on the tube too! Well I will gloat while I can, because this probably won't last too long, but COLORADO is 2-o!!! Sorry Brad, but Duchene will WHOOP Tavares's butt any day! Anderson is finally emerging from his backup shadows and is showing he is a number one. Lets hope he stays consistent! But what a year it will be for rookies, SO many good ones. The race for the Calder may have a few obvious choices, but there will be some tough competition pushing from below. Niemi, Tavares, Duchene, Gustavson, Kane, Hedman, Myers, Varlamov, Karlson, ETC ETC ETC..., it will be good watching. I would put money on a potential Subban call up too for the Habs, (He can try his Spin O Rama's all he wants). Either way, quick end on the NHL, but its gonna be a great gritty year. Im going to love watching the Flyers, love em or hate em, they are scary. Emery is playing like he can, lets just hope his head stays in the game. And look at the goon potential on this team! Its nuts. No bench clearing brawls against these guys please! Emery/Pronger/Laperriere/Richards/Hartnell/Carcillo/Coburn. Its just a bit scary! Will touch on NHL on less busy days!
Either way my day ended with a AAA Major Midget Lines. What a mess of a game. Think it ended 7-2 or something, 84 minutes in penalties, and could have been many many more. Ref did a good job keeping it in control though, but what a bunch of idiots these players were. Now idiot is harsh, so I will take that back somewhat, but it wasnt a pleasent game for anyone. First of all, this is AAA, the "elite" of minor hockey. One would assume there would be a bunch of affiliated kids for these squads. The one team today dressed 10 players. 10! Come on! Its a waste of time for everyone dressing 10 and expecting to have a meaningful game. Wake up! There was two big hits into the bench though which was fun to see! Was a fun first time doing AAA though, hope to do a bunch more. (Dave! Get your son in there! Get him healthy! They need him!)
Either way, gotta hit the hay, gonna watch rest of the battle of Alberta, then nap, yes nap, it is currently 12:40 and I gotta be up at 6 for practice! These kids are gonna kill me! Battle of Alberta, along with a few other games are chippy! I love this hockey!

My First Blog Post!

Well here we are, off and running. I figured with so much going on in my busy life, I may as well document it for myself so I can remember things, and for your reading pleasure. My name is Mike, I am a 22 year old fool who spends too much time at cold rinks, bars and parties, and too little time sleeping. What can one do? Enjoy life while I can eh?
Just as an example of how much my life is effected by hockey, I am currently writing this while watching Detroit vs St Louis (STL Winning AGAIN! Stupid Wings!). I am also waiting to get into the washroom to shave (for those of you who know me, this is rare, VERY rare). I get to line my first AAA game tonight, and they are throwing my big body right into a Major Midget AAA game as my cherry popping. Exciting indeed! I am pretty tired however, as I had to coach this morning at 8:15 am. This isn't terribly early for most people, but lets put this into perspective. A) I was up until 3:30 last night partying, so waking up at 7:00am hurts. B) I enjoy sleep, so waking up early is a pain in the butt. C) From my house to arena is a 30 minute drive, and I must be at the game 45 minutes early, if not earlier. Thus, for an 8:15 game, waking up at 7:00am is pushing it! I will complain about early mornings all the time, so get used to it, but I will always be there!
Either way thanks for reading! Keep looking back as I will try to post as much as possible! I will post tonight when I get home on how the AAA game went, as well as our game this morning. I will also speak a bit on the nights NHL scores, if im not impressed!
